Houston alt-rock band Without a Face joined up with UA to offer some insight on promotional companies. As full time college students, WAF feels promo companies can save some time in getting your name out, while leaving all the creative control in your own hands instead of a record labels. What's important to note before going any further into this is Without a Face still works very hard on their own to book shows, promote online, and just get their music heard.
Singer/Guitarist Henry estimates the band has spent about $1500 in over 2 years, split between 5 or 6 companies. The greatest success out of this was in a mere $20 spent on a company that gains Myspace friends, netting WAF with over 1300 friends in 2 days. While that does prove priciest isn’t always best, it is important to do your homework.
WAF’s Mark and Alan note you should check to see how the companies present their bands and how they would present you. Image is important and fans won’t know you didn’t want the cheesy graphics and bad Photoshop jobs a cheap company can use to represent you. Henry has had good success using traditional search engines to find good ones, searching by “online music community” and “indie music promotion.” While pretty much any promotional company can generally be found on Myspace these days, it would be a good idea to check consumer sites first like RipOffReport.com, or even just around Google. In reverse, when you come across a promotional company’s website , you might want to check around on Myspace for them as well to see how big their client/fan base is, and to see if people are leaving them great comments.
Only the band members themselves can really decide whether or not a promotional company is the route they want to take. This decision should be based on what finances you have, how much time you have to do it yourself, and what your ultimate goal is. Henry ended our interview with a very good point, “One thing's for sure, bands that are NOT signed in the year 2007 are much better off than bands that were NOT signed in 1977.”
